The COVID Chronicles #30: Mother's Day

Yesterday was Mother's Day. Instead of getting together for a meal, we all got together on Zoom for what has become a weekly family chat with my sister and husband in the VA. Wife and I painted the wall opposite our computer with a Mother's Day message and some artwork by Wife, which means that today, and every following day until we paint the wall, I will now have to use a virtual background in my Zoom meetings with students or otherwise.

This is supposed to be the last week of the stay at home order for our state. It remains to be seen if it is to be extended again. We're supposed to be able to dine out in restaurants again, but Wife and I are going to maintain our "lockdown mentality" for awhile.

I'm still waking up, so all for this morning.

Lenten Fast Post #3

On Saturday, I fasted all day. I did have a breakfast in the morning after sunrise b/c I legitimately felt hungry, so I had 1/2 cup of instant oatmeal, some blueberries, an apple, 3 dates, and a banana. I did not eat again until well after sundown when I got some chicken nuggets and chicken fries from Burger King b/c I was waiting on a locksmith to let me in house b/c I had locked myself out.  Sundays are "feast days" in the Methodist tradition so I had a balanced breakfast and then did not eat until after 7pm, when I had spaghetti, salad, and 4 St. Louis style ribs.  I have eaten nothing today, so I'm very much looking forward to dinner, which I expect will be a roasted potato cubed with carrots, leftover ribs, and a salad. Prior to the breaking of the fast, I will of course offer up a prayer and then break the fast.  All for today.

The COVID Chronicles #39: Hail Storm!

We had about 30 minute hail storm yesterday here in Old Mining Town and it did a number on our vegetable garden. It also knocked out power for about an hour. Wife was home alone and took the video above.  It also did a number on our vegetable garden. Below is a picture of what is left of our volunteer squash plants. It looks like we had one already starting.  Here's what it looked like before: Here's the zucchini plants:  And the beans:  So tonight, I raked up the leaves that were torn off our apricot tree and buried them in the new compost bed. Theft

I consider myself lucky to not have been the victim of too many crimes in my lifetime and I feel this is because I have not had the misfortune of residing in areas with high crime rates. Flagstaff, Japan, Bullhead City, and now Bisbee.  In high school, someone thought it would be funny to put orange cones on my pick-up while it was parked along the street one night while my mom, sister, and I were out to dinner. In college, someone stole the CD player w/ car combo (remember those?) and some other items in the glove box out of my pick-up overnight, but that was my fault because I left it unlocked. I think someone also tried to steal the pick-up once and damaged the steering column, but that's another story all together. In Japan I never worried about theft and often left the door to my apartment unlocked for days a time. In Bullhead City, I think someone keyed the side of the Yukon, perhaps a student at the school I worked at who perceived I did them wrong in some way.  On Th
